Mini Mixed Media Abstracts

These playful, intuitive, mixed media pieces are an exploration in color, texture and composition.

The beauty of these small paintings lies in the process as well as the end result. I love the unexpected outcomes that result from allowing oneself to let go of expectations, and mess around with whatever supplies are to hand.

I have used these small paintings to dig into different techniques, taking advantage the low stakes nature to allow myself to take risks, try new things and, let my inner child have a whole lot of fun.

In this piece, I have included layers of collage to create bold contrast and interesting texture.

Here I have explored the concepts of harmony and movement within a color palette. Simple marks applied in varying size, value, and hue generate the feeling of a bustling crowd.

I really enjoy adding fragments of text into these small works. There is something about text – typeface or handwritten – that draws me into a painting. In this piece, I love the way the text appears then disappears from view.

I have pushed myself to use a variety of color palettes during this project, but of course, I still have my favorites. The bright cadmium yellow, next to the varying depths of alizarin crimson, with the fun splashes of bold turquoise, all tempered by the soft pink in this piece… these colors are my jam.

These are only a small selection of the paintings in this project, chosen to show how much variety there is in this still growing collection. To view more from my Mini Mixed Media series click here.
